Going the Agile way...what is the ideal length of a Sprint?

Sprints typically last between 2 to 4 weeks. Having adopted the Agile methodology from 2006, Changepond understands that there are many project specific and context specific factors that influence the duration of a Sprint. It includes -

  • Are the stakeholders equipped to support "agile" development?
  • Overall experience of the team
  • Ability of the stakeholders to provide continuous feedback
  • Ability to plan the backlogs and also an entire Sprint
  • Attaining the productivity balance & optimum velocity of the team during a Sprint

Changepond firmly believes that the sprint duration cannot be the same for all scenarios. Changepond have hands on experience in delivering solutions on a sprint duration varying from 1 week to 4 weeks and the learning is summarized in the table below:

Based on our experience, a successful execution of a Sprint means involvement from the business team. The business team owns the product and the responsibility of accepting or rejecting a user story and eventually an entire Sprint. For complex projects that involves sign-off from multiple stakeholders across departments demands more time for the Agile team to validate the Sprint and eventually sign-off. Changepond have experience in executing agile projects where feedback from multiple stakeholders is part of the scope.

Changepond strongly recommends a sprint duration of 3 weeks and if the customer insists on a reduced sprint duration, Changepond explains the pros and cons and advises the customer not to have a sprint duration less than 2 weeks.
